Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that our bodies need in small amounts to function. However, one in every three individuals globally suffer from what is known as hidden hunger, or micronutrient deficiencies. In Asia Pacific, only 33 percent of consumers are very knowledgeable about the health benefits of vitamins and supplements. Four in five said they would like to know more about these benefits. This is where HCPs can step in to reinforce the importance of micronutrients and thoughtful consumption to their patients and illustrate the various ways a healthy diet and supplementation can boost general immunity, health, and physical fitness. It helps to consider a multi-faceted approach to wellness – targeted nutrition to support the organs, sleep, and mood – all contributing to an individual’s overall well-being. Consumers can also consult with their HCPs to accurately incorporate supplementation in their daily nutritional regimen. This kind of patient-doctor transparency is critical in helping to support favorable clinical outcomes.
What comprises good health?
For some, having a good immune system and proper food consumption may suffice. For others, it includes taking vitamins and supplements which offer benefits that we may not get from our everyday diets. Unfortunately, with the wide array of products in the market, there is often confusing information on safety and efficacy for consumers. As such, it is important that consumers have adequate access to the right information as they achieve their health and wellness goals. Here, consumers see healthcare professionals (HCPs) as a trusted source of nutritional information. HCPs are well-positioned to educate consumers on good nutrition and the supportive role of supplements, so that consumers can eventually become their own health advocates. I have a few thoughts that can help HCPs guide people to achieve and maintain their personal wellness goals.

be their own health advocates
Helping consumers

The marketplace is filled with new nutrition products that claim compelling results. Beyond looking at the lowest cost, there are other factors to consider such as:
Reputation Matters
Now more than ever, there has been an urgent call to strengthen mental health systems. In this light, both HCPs and consumers should place greater emphasis on the importance of countering mental stress and other psychological illnesses. HCPs can make a conscious effort to engage with their patients and evaluate their mental wellness during consultations. In the meantime, people should be encouraged to reach out for help when they feel their mental health is being compromised. Community support also makes a big difference. Joining a support group with those with similar wellness goals or life stages can help individuals feel motivated in their personal journey.
Mental Health is Wealth
Technology and social media also play important roles in healthy active living. In a Herbalife Nutrition Health Inertia survey, one in two respondents used technology tools to support their healthy living regimens. This included fitness classes and videos, fitness trackers, fitness and workout apps, and nutrition apps. Some also found that social media had a positive influence on their mental health, and cited factors - such as reading light-hearted content and inspirational posts from social media influencers - as having a positive effect on their psyche.
Technological Assistants
Like anything – whether it is diet or exercise – consistency is key. Supplements are not a one-and-done deal; it needs to be incorporated into daily routines and a lifelong wellness plan. Recent studies suggest that taking certain targeted nutrition supplements like selenium and CoQ10¹, lutein² and calcium³ may have long-term benefits if taken consistently. Helping consumers gain the ability to make more educated decisions about their nutritional needs in relation to their desired health outcomes is a step in the right direction. Self-care attitudes are essential in the longer term, with the deft guiding hand of HCPs along the way.
Driving Self-advocacy
Getting solid information about the company’s governance, management team, and a group of advisors in public domains can establish an initial level of credibility.
Look for the company’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), product guarantee, third-party verifications, and certificates (such as ISO 17025 or NSF). The level of scientific and medical experts employed can also be reviewed.
Keeping abreast with news on food and nutritional standards to make more informed purchase decisions. Some examples of credible information sources in the region include those from GERMAS in Indonesia, the Korean Nutrition Society, the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), the International Life Sciences Institute in Taiwan, and the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Vietnam.

As the world turns a page on the pandemic, much is still unknown on the full implications of the Covid-19 virus and its health impacts¹ in the long term. Recent studies show that this virus could increase the risks² of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This is especially true for people with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions or those who lead unhealthy lifestyles. In Asia, it is a concerning development where CVDs were already the leading cause of 10.8 million deaths³ in 2019. Amidst this landscape, how can consumers maintain or boost their vascular wellness? The shift in focus towards preventive care can help. This includes choosing a healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition that promotes heart health. Regular check-ups and maintaining a good relationship with a healthcare professional (HCP) are also helpful.
at the Heart of Vascular Health
Keeping Nutrition and Fitness
by Dr Alex Teo, Director, Research & Development and Scientific Affairs, Asia Pacific, Herbalife Nutrition
With the added threat of Covid-19 related cardiovascular risks, an active lifestyle is even more important. By advocating an active lifestyle with the right nutrition, HCPs can change the way people manage their vascular health. Medical facts and health resources need to be conveyed to the public in an easy-to-understand manner. Caregivers can also identify people who are at a higher risk by looking at their parameters such as lifestyle, food habits, the existence of heart problems, diabetes, and the individual as well as family health history.
Role of Healthcare Professionals
The ideal calorie intake for heart health comprises 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent healthy fats. This can be combined with 25 grams of fiber and adequate hydration – around eight glasses of water per day. A dietary pattern of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains provides a good daily dose of vitamins and minerals. Other natural molecules such as omega-3 fatty acids, nitric oxides, and flavanols also have beneficial effects on vascular health:

Nitric Oxide

Our General Nutrition Philosophy
People with existing or potential vascular risks should note these tips on the right kind and duration of exercise. For instance, the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity aerobic workouts or 75 minutes of intense aerobic exercises per week. The benefits of exercise are numerous such as lowering blood pressure, strengthening muscles leading to superior oxygenation, and weight and stress management. It is also crucial to complement these exercises with adequate nutrition and food intake.
Get Your Heart Active
Multi-sector collaborations can also go hand in hand with ongoing efforts to raise public education. For example, Herbalife Nutrition has collaborated with various government bodies and nutrition organizations. In Indonesia, the company’s partnership with GERMAS, a government organization under the Ministry of Health, has aided the dissemination of information from GERMAS’ many public health campaigns to local consumers. This was carried out with the help of Herbalife Nutrition’s extensive distributor networks.
The identification of Covid-19 as a contributor to vascular diseases has raised a new area of concern. However, these risks can be mitigated. It starts with enabling wider access to accurate and proper information about the causes of vascular diseases, and the adoption of more prevention measures like balanced nutrition and active lifestyle habits.

Protein is one of the three types of macronutrients that we consume from our diet, other than fat and carbohydrate. It is made up of 20 amino acids that bind together in various combinations to form different types of protein that serve diverse functions in our body. These functions include:
Immunity against infections (antibodies)
Energy supply
Tissue growth, maintenance, and repair
What is Protein?

Entrepreneurship Trends in Asia Pacific
Entrepreneurship is a growing trend in this region, especially among the younger generation. Nutrition For Healthy Aging
By Dr David Heber, M.D., PhD, FACP, FASN,Chairman, Herbalife Nutrition Institute
As people age, more focus is placed on long-term health, with people of all ages seeking products that have healthy aging qualities. In fact, according to the Natural Marketing Institute, the younger generation is just as interested in healthy aging products than baby boomers. Brain health, in particular, is a growing trend.
Every year, more consumers are recognizing the many benefits of higher protein intake. According to a study by Harvard Health, people who consumed more grams of protein at breakfast had lower blood sugar levels and were more satiated during the day than those who consumed less protein. Vegetarians and vegans will need more plant-based protein sources, which not only include traditional sources such as beans and nuts, but also mixtures of different plant proteins. Soy protein is one of the highest quality plant-based protein, but blending a variety of sources such as quinoa, sesame, and peas can increase protein quality tremendously. Protein pacing is another trend gaining popularity. Practitioners take protein up to five times a day to reach their personal goals. Similarly, many people are getting their body composition measured to calculate their total protein needs for the day.
Trend 1 High Protein Diets and Protein Pacing
When it comes to brain aging, we should consider 4 distinct aspects: 1. Memory 2. Mood 3. Attention 4. Cognition In the industry of supplements in general, consumers tend to look for a single-supplement solution, rather than a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach. To deal with these four factors, the public needs an integrated program that combines diet, supplements, and exercise. In her TED Talk, neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki explains how exercise improves mood, attention, and memory, providing both immediate and long-term benefits to brain health. Her research shows that physical activity has transformative effects on the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, ultimately protecting the brain against neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. As an additional note, abdominal fat and a high-fat diet filled with Omega 6 fatty acids contribute to brain inflammation. According to the Society of Neuroscience, a high number of people with dementia also have coexisting heart disease. While more research is needed, these initial findings are promising and indicate the positive influence nutrition and exercise can have on how we age.
Trend 2 Opportunities in Brain Health
Body shaping is a growing trend amongst people aged 35 to 44. More and more men and women are opting for natural ways to reshape their bodies – primarily through diet and exercise. One reason is the shift in perspectives over body image. For example, according to a meta-analysis done by the American Psychological in 2016, women are becoming more accepting of their bodies. Based on the study, dissatisfaction over their bodies has decreased over a 31-year period. As more people focus on their health and their individual body shape – instead of simply aiming to be skinny or thin – body shaping workouts will grow in popularity.
