Since its inception, Herbalife Nutrition has set its sights on making a worldwide impact by improving people’s lives with good nutrition. While quite a bit has changed since 1980, I’m proud of the fact that this mission has largely remained the same.
As the saying goes, “With age, comes wisdom,” and I personally think Herbalife Nutrition has aged quite nicely over the last 40 years. As we embark on a new era of success, we must remember that innovation and thoughtful changes have brought us this far.
One of those thoughtful changes is our new Chairman and CEO John Agwunobi, whose vision, purpose and experience are perfectly aligned with our mission. It goes without saying, but I’m certain he will continue to build on the legacy of exceptional leadership that has already existed.
Finally, I have to say I think it’s incredibly fitting that we’re celebrating Herbalife Nutrition’s 40th Anniversary in 2020, a time when our vision is clearer than ever before. We’re continuously looking to the next level, to live it up and inspire our communities, and I know there is much, much more in store for the Herbalife Nutrition family.
Because of the hard work of our Herbalife Nutrition Independent Distributors and employees and the unrivaled support within the Herbalife Nutrition community, our company has grown in ways I’m sure would make our Founder and First Distributor, Mark Hughes (1956-2000), very proud. Getting to Know John Agwunobi
1980 was a banner year for underdogs who defied the odds. On a hockey rink in Lake Placid, New York, a scrappy group of college kids won a Gold medal after defeating a Soviet team that was thought to be unbeatable. A Hungarian professor of architecture introduced a six-sided puzzle he called the “Rubik’s Cube,” which went on to become one of the biggest selling toys of all time. And a young man in Los Angeles sank every dollar he had into a dream – to offer good nutrition and an entrepreneurial business opportunity to anyone who wanted it.
That man was Herbalife Nutrition Founder and First Distributor, Mark Hughes (1956-2000). Having grown up watching his mother struggle with obesity and other health problems, Mark developed a strong desire to help people live healthy, active lives from a young age.
Through his first jobs at two wellness companies, Mark met the scientists who helped him achieve the goal he had set for himself – to develop a world-class product for the weight-management market. This “meal replacement shake” would be the spark that launched his very own company, which he decided to call Herbalife Nutrition.
40 Years Ago…
But Mark wasn’t content to sell his Herbalife Nutrition products through traditional retail. Having watched his own family members struggle, he knew that social support was the key to success. He had also worked at several direct-selling companies and was determined to create a business opportunity grounded in responsible business practices.
By giving people access to nutrition products and the ability to create their own business selling those products, Mark Hughes was a pioneer in the emerging trend of independent entrepreneurs. He called these business builders “Distributors”.
It wasn’t always easy. In the early days, Mark sold products directly from his car until he was able to lease a small office in Los Angeles, California. Even with these humble trappings, Mark had what millions of Distributors have had since – a purpose to help everyone he came in contact with reach their highest potential in wellness and in business. As Mark himself was fond of saying, he was on a mission for nutrition.
A Vision Takes Shape
Today, nearly 20 years after Mark’s untimely passing, we are motivated by a relentless commitment to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Like Mark Hughes, our educated and trained Herbalife Nutrition Independent Distributors provide personalized support for their customers’ nutrition and wellness goals.

A Lasting Mark
You grew up on three continents. Can you tell us a little bit about your personal history? I grew up with a great appreciation for different cultures, backgrounds and ideas instilled in me by my parents. My father was Nigerian, and my mom is Scottish. I was born in Scotland and was educated on three continents – elementary school in Europe, high school in Africa and college in the U.S. Since then, our family has become even more diverse and more global as my siblings and I married and had children of our own. Our family dinner table sometimes looks like the United Nations! It’s the same when I look out at the Herbalife Nutrition Independent Distributors at our events – there are so many cultures and backgrounds all brought together as a single, supportive community. I love it.
You started your career as a pediatrician. How did your life journey lead you here to Herbalife Nutrition? I come from a family of medical professionals. My grandfather was a doctor, my father was a doctor, my mom was a nurse. Medicine and healthcare are what I was surrounded by growing up, but I actually wanted to be an architect. I wanted to build things. My dad promised to pay for my education in architecture – just as soon as I finished medical school!
And then you went on to serve as a public health official, first in the State of Florida, and then as Assistant Secretary of Health. Why did you make the move? Every step in my career has enabled me to serve more people. As a pediatrician, you can only serve as many children as you can see in a day. As a public health official, you can help entire communities and an entire country. My time as a public health official really opened my eyes to the megatrends we talk about so often, like obesity and the high cost of healthcare. It drove home for me the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It’s what I love about the work we do at Herbalife Nutrition – promoting good nutrition and the benefits of being active. Both are important to overall health and well-being.
So, to serve even more people, you accepted a position at Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, overseeing their health and wellness practice. Can you talk about that? That’s right. Again, it was about serving even more people. At the time, more than 140 million people shopped at Walmart each week, many of whom visited our pharmacies, wellness clinics and optometry centers. The job also included oversight of Walmart’s eyewear manufacturing labs in the U.S. and contract labs in Mexico. It’s where I learned about manufacturing first-hand. In addition, we worked with the largest consumer packaged goods companies in the world and had a private-label business, so it helped me understand products, packaging and pricing.
Our Distributors are the heart and soul of this company. I have a deep appreciation for Mark’s vision to improve the nutrition habits of the world and for what our Distributors do to make that vision a reality. Working together, with a shared set of values and priorities, we will build this company bigger, better, more impactful. And we’re just getting started!
Everything we do is in service of our Distributors, to strengthen our Distributor Difference. That one-on-one relationship our Distributors have with their customers and their downlines is special and unique in business.

I loved being a pediatrician. It’s where I really understood the importance of trusting relationships in the workplace. New moms are very reluctant to trust you at first. Their newborns are the most precious things in their lives, and they have dreams for their children. They have to trust you with those dreams. It’s a lot like Herbalife Nutrition, where we must run our business with integrity and with our Distributors’ best interests at heart.
It sounds like your career journey has really prepared you to lead Herbalife Nutrition. What are you most excited about in your new role? I’m excited about so many things, and so honored to have this opportunity. I love the collaborative nature of our company, and the way we work together with our Distributor leaders. And everything we do is in service of our Distributors, to strengthen our Distributor Difference. That one-on-one relationship our Distributors have with their customers and their downlines is special – it’s something that was missing in all my previous jobs. It’s about helping others succeed, to achieve results, and that’s something unique in business. I mentioned earlier I wanted to be an architect and wanted to build things. Now my role is to help our Distributors build their businesses. Plain and simple. Everything I do, everything our more than 9,000 employees do, is to help them grow and prosper.

A conversation with Dr. Luigi Gratton on how to naturally support your immune system
How does the immune system work? The immune system is made up of a network of cells and organs that works as the body's natural defense. The first line of defense is your skin, which acts as a barrier to protect you from potential invading organisms. But generally, when we talk about the immune system, we’re referring to the cells involved in keeping your body healthy.
What happens when we get sick? Your body is constantly bombarded by different types of organisms. When the immune system is threatened, your natural defenses kick into gear. The immune system may destroy these outside invaders, or it can simply make the environment unwelcome to a foreign pathogen.
What can weaken the immune system? There are many factors that can weaken the immune system. Something as minor as a cut on your skin can offer an entry point for pathogens to invade your body. There are other risks that can challenge your body as well, and compromise your internal immune defense. These factors can include strenuous exercise, lack of sleep, a poor diet, overexerting yourself, travel, and changes in weather.
How can we strengthen our immune systems? Strengthening the immune system starts by leading a healthy, active lifestyle, which includes exercising regularly, getting sufficient rest and eating the right types of foods. It’s also important to avoid all of the bad things we know can be harmful: don’t overwork yourself and be sure to avoid certain oxidants or stressors, like smoking and alcohol.
What foods should we eat to support the immune system? Eating the right foods can go a long way toward supporting a healthy immune system. Choose foods that are rich in antioxidants, specifically Vitamins A, C and E, which can be found in sweet potatoes, bell peppers, spinach, and many other foods. Tell us about your first impression using HN MyClub.
Trina: It was really easy! One thing I like is how simple it is to share our menus and recipes with our downline. They used to ask me to send them recipes, but now I just tell them to download recipes and menus from HN MyClub. That feature has been really convenient.
What was it like setting up your Club in the app?
Trina: It was a nightmare! I would create receipts a couple days a week and stay late at the Club for one or two hours, or I’d be stuck late at night receipting at the end of the month.
Isidro: Most of my downline Distributors waited until the last day of the month to receipt everything. They would take notes from every transaction, and then the day before the end of the month, it was really stressful for them to finish on time.
What was it like receipting before HN MyClub?
Isidro: HN MyClub has totally changed the game. With real-time receipting, my operators don’t have to wait until the last minute to create receipts. The end of the month is like any other day for me now!
Trina: HN MyClub has saved me so much time! When a customer orders one of our Lit Teas, which includes Herbal Aloe Concentrate, Herbal Tea Concentrate and Liftoff , the receipt automatically includes all of the products. It also makes it easier if a customer wants to reorder what they got last time or use a pre-paid card – I can just look it up and keep track in HN MyClub.
How did HN MyClub help?
Trina: It has! We have customers who are regulars who just sit down at the bar when they come in. Before HN MyClub, we were so busy sometimes we didn’t even notice them. With the Kiosk feature in HN MyClub, which allows customers to check in once they arrive, it’s so much easier to know who’s next.
Isidro: When a customer comes in, HN MyClub makes it easy to look them up in the system, take their order and accept payment. In just three steps, I’ve already taken care of a customer and everything has been receipted.

Trina: The reports are amazing! They show me my volume, which items are moving the most, or what products we may want to start promoting. The reports also help us leverage the power of promotions. We like to offer seasonal items, and HN MyClub helps us get creative.
Isidro: I find the best training for new Distributors is behind the bar making shakes and interacting with customers. Instead of spending three or four hours training a Distributor, with HN MyClub I can just explain how the app works, and in 10 or 15 minutes they’re ready to start. By the end of their shift, I use the reports in HN MyClub and explain how their day was – what they made in profit, their remaining inventory supply and so on. From there, I help them plan ways to increase their profit and build their business.
Trina: My customers really love it! People are already using apps to order products ahead of time and then pick them up in store, so it’s something that’s familiar to them. With Engage, customers can come in at our busiest times, and they don’t have to wait. We like it too cause sometimes when it’s slow, we’re able to keep busy. It’s a win-win.

Trina: Many Distributors are already using other POS systems and change can be hard. But it helps knowing that Herbalife Nutrition has an entire team devoted to HN MyClub, and they’re always helping us out, which makes it that much sweeter.
Isidro: It’s so amazing when I introduce someone new to the business and I show them HN MyClub. I can see the expression on their face – they’re amazed Herbalife Nutrition has this tool! We’re not old-fashioned administrators working on paper. Everything is digital. We’re ahead of the game.
