Outer Nutrition: Take Good Care of Your Skin
This might not come as a surprise, but inner and outer nutrition are deeply connected. Your dietary choices, daily supplements, water intake and overall healthy, active lifestyle are all essential steps to healthy-looking skin.
Cleansing, toning, moisturizing and protecting your skin are also essential steps to take in pursuit of a youthful-looking appearance.
How they work together
What we call “Outer Nutrition” is simply about achieving and maintaining healthy skin and hair.
Just as your heart, brain, and muscles need proper nutrition for long-term health, your skin and hair require the right nourishment to be able to perform their functions: protection, heat regulation and sense of touch.
That is why taking care of our skin and having a proper skin care routine that consists of cleansing, moisturizing and supplementation is key!
Outer Nutrition
The condition of your skin and hair is affected by your diet, age and the environment. You can’t control some of these factors – like aging or climate – but you can manage what you eat, so it supports your skin and hair.
Maintaining a healthy diet can actually be hugely beneficial for your physical health, both inside and out. A variety of nutrients, including protein, antioxidants, vitamins, and collagen can help improve the health of your skin and hair. People with good-looking skin and hair tend to have daily healthy habits!

How they work together
Good skin care is good self-care. If you want to look great and feel your best, it’s important to know how to take care of your skin with proper outer nutrition.
The first step in knowing how to protect yourself from the sun is to understand the basics about UV radiation. Click the image to learn how UVA and UVB rays affect the skin.

UVA Rays
• Penetrates your skin more deeply than UVB rays
• Causes the skin to age prematurely, leading to wrinkles
• Easily passes through clouds, glass and even some clothing
UVB Rays
• Damages the outermost layer of skin
• Causes sunburns and cataracts
• Affects the immune system
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It is located primarily in the connective tissue and it is responsible for giving the dermis its firm structure.
As we age, the production of collagen in our bodies diminishes. The skin suffers from a progressive loss of moisture and becomes increasingly dry. When this happens, the dermis becomes thinner; the connective tissue loses its firmness and elasticity, and wrinkles and sagging start to occur.
Lifestyle factors such as diet, excessive sun exposure and smoking can also reduce collagen production.

Skin in your 20s will show minimal signs of aging. However, skin may look dull and fatigued due to stress, lack of sleep or other lifestyle factors.

Skin Through the Years
As we age, so does our skin. Fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, looseness and dryness are all the direct results of skin aging. While aging is inevitable, there are steps you can take to maintain healthy, clean and attractive skin every step of the way.

What Is Your Skin Type?
Not all skin types are created equal. Whether your skin is oily, dry or somewhere in between, you need a skin care routine that will support your needs.
Click through to learn more about each skin type as well
as tips and product recommendations to help your skin type thrive.
To understand why skin and hair care is so important, you first need to understand your skin.
The skin is your body’s largest organ and it has many important functions. Not only does it protect your body against germs and injuries, it also helps regulate your body temperature.
There are two ways to take care of your skin: inner nutrition and outer nutrition.
Understanding Outer Nutrition
Your 30s is when you may start noticing the signs of aging and sun damage from your earlier years. The skin starts to lose collagen and elastin, which means your skin may not appear as firm. Fine lines might start to appear on your face, especially under the eyes.
You may need to change your skin care regimen to include more moisturizing products
Consider adding an extra step in your routine to focus specifically on the skin near your eyes
Wear big sunglasses with adequate photoprotection UVA/UVB to shield your face from the sun and to reduce eye wrinkles
•
•
•
Skin in Your 30s
Once you’re in your 40s, you may start to notice changes to your skin’s firmness. Skin may appear saggy due to a loss in elasticity, wrinkles will be more pronounced as well as uneven skin tone due to sun damage.
Apply a minimum of SPF 30 daily to all areas of the skin – not just the face
Use an exfoliant 1–3 times a week to maintain a youthful glow
Moisturize your skin from head to toe
•
•
•
Skin in Your 40s
For women in their 50s, skin may become more dry due to a decrease in estrogen levels from menopause. Wrinkles and fine lines will settle in and sun damage may appear in the form of dark spots. The skin’s texture may not be as smooth as in previous years.
Continue to wear sunscreen with broad spectrum protection daily
Keep your skin hydrated with a good moisturizer
Exfoliate the skin at least once a week

Skin in Your 50s
and Beyond
Epidermis
• Top layer of the skin
• Creates new cells
• Makes melanin, which gives skin its color
• First line of defense against infections and damage
• Prevents skin from drying out
• Contains collagen, hair follicles,
sweat and oil glands, and nerve endings
• Provides elasticity
• Provides resistance
Dermis
• Deepest and thickest layer of the skin
• Regulates the body’s temperature
• Stores fat (for energy)
• A natural layer that protects organs,
muscles and bones
Hypodermis
or Subcutaneous Tissue
Normal skin is balanced; it’s not oily or dry.
Skin is firm
Minimal fine lines or wrinkles
Not prone to breakouts

Normal Skin Tips
Experiment with skin care products to find what’s right for you
•
Choose a cleanser that’s formulated for normal to dry skin to help
replenish moisture, such as Herbalife SKIN Soothing Aloe Cleanser
Use a facial serum coupled with daytime and nighttime moisturizer to help
nourish your dry skin
Keep your entire body moisturized with a rich, hydrating body lotion like
Herbal Aloe Hand & Body Cream
•
•
•
Almost no oil present on the surface
Visible, flaky patches and cracks in the skin
Fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable
Signs of Dry Skin
•
•
•
Dry skin is caused by a lack of oil in the skin. People with dry skin tend to have fewer breakouts than those with oily skin.
Dry Skin
Choose a cleanser that’s formulated for normal to oily skin, including combination skin,
like Herbalife SKIN Polishing Citrus Cleanser, to help reduce sebum on the skin
after one use
Use an alcohol-free toner to freshen your skin
Use a moisturizer or serum that also contains SPF, such as Herbalife SKIN
Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, to help prevent sunburn
Apply Herbalife SKIN Purifying Mint Clay Mask to improve the appearance of pores
•
•
•
•
Large pores
Prone to acne
Shine
Signs of Oily Skin
•
•
•
Oily skin occurs when sebaceous glands produce a high level of sebum (oil) on the skin. Because oil keeps the skin moist, this skin type is less prone to wrinkles than dry skin.
Oily Skin
Use products designed for oily skin on your T-Zone and products for dry skin on other areas
Choose a cleanser that’s formulated for normal to oily skin, like Herbalife SKIN
Polishing Citrus Cleanser, to help reduce sebum on the skin
Gently exfoliate with Herbalife SKIN Instant Reveal Berry Scrub
•
•
•
An oily T-zone (forehead, nose and chin)
Dry or normal skin on cheeks
Signs of Combination Skin
•
•
Combination skins means the skin is oily in some areas and dry in others.
Combination Skin
Drink plenty of water
Look for moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe vera
Choose facial and body cleansers with no added sulfates,
like those in the Herbalife SKIN line
•
•
•
Skin will look dull, sallow and tired in its appearance
Skin may feel tight, sensitive and, in some cases, like it’s burning
Fine lines and wrinkles can become much more noticeable
Signs of Dehydrated Skin
•
•
•
Dehydrated skin is a condition that can affect any skin type. It’s the result
of the body needing moisture, both inside and out.
Dehydrated Skin
Look for products with salicylic acid, like our Herbalife SKIN Clearify line
Use blemish-fighting products in all forms, including facial care, spot treatments,
and even body washes and soaps
Choose a cleanser that’ll help control and remove sebum from the skin
•
•
•
Skin is oily or dry
Pores clog easily
Susceptible to whiteheads, blackheads and blemishes
Signs of Acne-Prone Skin
•
•
•
Everyone can suffer from breakouts. Even though acne is more common among teenagers, it can happen at any age. Women in their 20s and 30s may experience monthly breakouts due to hormones. Acne can also appear anywhere on the body.

It’s also about your hair and nails. Discover how you can achieve hair
and nails that are both healthy and strong.

Healthy Hair and Nails
Protein is essential in your diet, as your hair is made up of a tough protein called keratin, which helps form the strength of your hair, skin and nails. Also focus on trace minerals that can impact the hair, like copper, iron, magnesium and selenium, as well as Vitamins D and C.
Good Nutrition = Strong Hair
The combination of inner and outer nutrition is great for your hair. Here’s how the proper nutrition and the right products can help keep your hair healthy and strong.
Choose a shampoo specifically for your hair type that helps strengthen your hair. Look for more gentle ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter and plant-derived microproteins to help soften and strengthen hair.
Choose the Right Products
Even on the days when you might not be shampooing, if your hair is wet, apply some conditioner. This will help lock in much-needed moisture.
Condition
Protect hair with UV protection when going into the sun. As the sun fades your hair,
it causes it to become dry and brittle. Consider wearing a hat when spending time
in the sun.

Give your nails a break from nail polish so they can stay strong and not break.
Go Bare
Apply hand cream daily and massage it into your nails and surrounding cuticles.

Trimming your nails on a regular basis will help to keep them strong.
Trim and Maintain
Your nails are comprised of protein, so if you aren’t getting enough in your diet,
it will be reflected in your nails.
Eat Right
The appearance and strength of your fingernails are good indicators of their overall health. Here are a few habits that you can develop to truly make a difference in your nails.
Wearing gloves when you’re washing the dishes or cleaning your house is the best
